Kenya's Trending Topics on Monday 24th April 2017

Kenyans on social media were Monday discussing various topics including the political ambitions of former KTN journalist Mohamed Ali aka Jicho Pevu who suffered a painful defeat in the ODM nominations in Nyali.

Here is why these topics were trending:

Jicho Pevu

Investigative feature Jicho Pevu was trending on Monday after KTN journalist Mohammed Ali lost in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) primaries in Nyali to Said Abdalla. Ali had claimed that the exercise was marred by massive irregularities and said that if he would lose his appeal, he would vie as an independent candidate.

Safaricom

Safaricom Limited also made headlines after normal services were disrupted. Kenyans were unable to communicate via calls and text messages, with some even claiming it was a ploy to interfere with the ongoing party primaries in Jubilee Party. The leading telecommunications company quickly moved to assure its customers that it was a technical hitch that would be corrected immediately.

Rosemary Odinga

Opposition Chief Raila Odinga's daughter was trending after she dropped out of the Kibra Parliamentary race over what she termed as her doctor's advice. Rosemary, who is still admitted at a South African hospital, confirmed her exit from the 2017 political race through a Facebook post. Kenyans on Twitter welcomed her move saying it was just right to let current Kibra MP Ken Okoth complete his term.

Siaya

Siaya County was also part of the trending topics after the ODM nomination exercise in the area was postponed to tomorrow, Tuesday 25th April. Residents, however, did not take this kindly as they suspected that this was a move aimed at rigging the nominations.

Kirinyaga

Kirinyaga County also caused an interesting online debate after Jubilee Party primaries kicked off in the area but some polling stations complained of having few ballot papers. Voters expressed their frustration and even apprehended one of the returning officers whom they suspected of putting the credibility of the exercise at stake.
