Kidero Govt Spends Millions of Public Funds on City Hall Lifts

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero is on the spot after his government spent millions on rehabilitation of the City Hall Annex Building.

The Governor's Procurement Officer, Solomon Obiero was questioned by the County Assembly Public Accounts Committee over the repair of three lifts in City hall at a cost of Sh28.8 Million.

Mr Obiero insisted that it was cheaper to repair the lifts than purchasing new ones because of  “extremely high prices”.

“The cost of repairing the three lifts had been ballooned by the high costs of spare parts that were shipped from outside the country,” he retorted.

The County Government was also accused of single sourcing for the company to conduct the repairs instead of advertising for tenders as is required by law.

Mr Obiero, however, argued that the tender was advertised on the Dailies on July 9 2013, but they did not receive bids from any interested parties, forcing them to single source Schindler Company which was responsible for installing the lift in the first place.

Obiero further explained that the County had to heed to the client's demand of giving an upfront payment of Sh15.4 Million because the government had a reputation of non-payment of debt.

The Nairobi County Government is still under probe to justify the spending.
