Lupita Pleads with Kenyans to Oppose Construction of SGR through Nairobi National Park

Award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has called on Kenyans to oppose the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) through the Nairobi National Park.

Through her Facebook post, Ms Nyong’o urged Kenyans to join hands and write to the Director General of National Environment Management Authority (NEMA ) to express their concerns about the planned project.

“If you, like me, care to preserve our wildlife and our natural reserves, write to the Director General of NEMA and express your concern that this sets an unacceptable precedent for Kenya's parks and reserves. Urge them to construct AROUND the park, not THROUGH it,” part of the post read.

The award winning actress acknowledged that Kenya was in need of a new railway but urged the government to look for alternative routes.

“Though we do need a new railway system, this plan is not the only solution available, “ she added.

Lupita now joins a long list of those opposing the SGR construction through the park after over 50 environmental conservationists held peaceful demonstrations in Langata on September 16, over the project.

The activists termed the multi-billion project "absurd", stating the railway line would destroy the park's ecosystem and might displace wildlife from their natural environment.
