MCAs Spend Sh5 Million on Trip to Learn Athletics

Members of County Assembly in Elgeyo-Marakwet flew out of the Country to benchmark on athletics, which in their defense regardless of the irony, was a 'non issue'.

The nine MCA's left Iten – the home of champions – and embarked on a trip to Congo Brazzaville for the eleventh edition of the African games, to draw lessons for the refurbishment of the County's Stadium. The trip is reported to have cost the County about Sh5 Million.

According to the ward representatives, those were privileges they were supposed to enjoy. “You will enjoy these priviledges too, so why should I be worried for using what is meant for me," Benson Kiptire, retorted.

The County Legislators went ahead to defend the trip noting that it was neither the first nor the last one.

One of them is quoted saying that they had previously gone on a trip to Singapore adding they were also intending to visit Brazil come next year for the Rio Olympics.

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos has defended the MCAs saying that he had no control on the expenditure of the County Assembly.

Meanwhile, the construction of the Governor's residence said to cost the county Sh100 Million was also underway. However, Governor Tolgos disputed the figure saying the budget allocated for that house was Sh50 Million.

Elgeyo-Marakwet is the latest county to have its turn in the limelight, over what has been considered extravagant expenditure.

This comes against the backdrop of claims that Meru County spent Sh7.8 Million on curtains for the County General Hospital.
