MPs Given Second Chance to Debate Bill Extending their Office Term

Members of Parliament will once again vote on a bill that could extend their stay in office, barely two days after the motion flopped.

National Assembly speaker Justin Muturi has allowed the bill be returned to the National Assembly for a second consideration.

The bill sponsored by ODM legislator David Ochieng, which seeks to change the election date from August to December, had suffered a setback on Tuesday after it failed to attain the required two thirds majority support.

216 MPs supported the bill but it fell short of the required 233 votes.

The Ugenya legislator expressed his disappointment, adding that the bill was shot down by the lack of support from members from his own party.

He, however, expressed intentions to appeal to the Speaker for the motion to be returned to the House on a technicality under Standing Order 116.

Ochieng maintains that the August date is too crowded with activities for elections to be held, citing the school calendar and the high tourist season during the period.
