New Salary Structure Announced by The SRC for Kenyan Civil Servants

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has announced that it will be adjusting the pay structure for all National and County Government employees.

The new terms not only introduces new pay grades but also rewards a significant pay hike for all civil servants.

In the new system, the lowest paid employees, formerly in Grade A, will now start at B1 and will earn a minimum of Sh14,442 – an increment of Sh6,000.

The lower cadre is for employees with low skills including cooks, drivers, telephones operators, and messengers.

The highest paid civil servants will be those in grade E4 and will earn a maximum of Sh576,120 per month - an increment of about Sh270,000.

This highest tier is for executive officers including secretaries, ambassadors, commissioners, deputy commissioners, chief officers, directors, and senior deputy directors.

Unlike the previous grading system where civil servants were distributed between grades A and P, the new structure will range from B and E.

The grades will then be calibrated based on seniority in each grade such that there will be 19 categories ranging from B1 to E4.

Senior and middle-level managers as well as high-level specialists, including section heads and heads of departments, will fall in Job Group D.

They will receive between Sh81,148 and Sh174,475.

Job Group C mainly comprises supervisors and highly skilled officers, they will earn a monthly salary of between Sh26,107 and Sh51,486.

The SRC hopes to use the simplified structure to harmonise the salaries of government employees and reduce the huge pay gaps that have hitherto been recorded in public service.

The new salary structure will be implemented from July 2017.
