Pedestrian Deaths On the Rise Despite Road Regulations

The National Transport and Safety Authority has released a report indicating that pedestrian deaths on the Kenyan roads is still on an all time high.

The statistics from the study shows that there have been many more pedestrian deaths in he country in the past three months with Nairobi accounting for almost 20 percent of the accidents most involving pedestrians.

According to the report the country losses 3000 annually as a result of rod accidents. Besides the loss of life, the country suffers economically with an estimated sh 45 billion being lost as a result.

NTSA Director General Francis Mejja says that most of the accidents result from motorists and pedestrians flouting traffic laws.

He was speaking in Nairobi during the launch of a campaign dubbed 'Save 1000 Lives' meant to create awareness especially among boda boda operators in an effort to reduce accidents on the road.

The campaign will see the private sector, in collaboration with the government, take a proactive role in ensuring safety on Kenyan roads.
