Prison and Heavy Fines For Employers Who Mistreat House helps

Following rampant cases of house helps being mistreated by their employers, a new bill seeking to protect domestic workers has been presented to parliament, that if endorsed would impose a three-year jail term and fines of up to Sh500,000 on offenders.

If enacted into law, The Domestic Workers Bill shall protect the workers from slavery, forced labour or any actions that demean their dignity.

The bill tabled in the National Assembly by Women Representative for Taita Taveta County, Joyce Lay, also proposes a two-year sentence for employers who fail to pay their house employees for any reason.

The proposal comes days after a house help in Kasarani, Nairobi was almost killed by her employer in a physically abuse sustaining head and chest injuries.

The 20-year old house help was saved by neighbours who reported the matter to Kasarani Police Station. The employer was arrested and investigations were launched into the alleged assault.
