Prisoner Escapes from Thika Hospital

A prisoner escaped from the Thika Level 5 Hospital where he was getting treatment for convulsive disorder.

33-year-old Paul Wainaina, who was facing defilement charges, was admitted to the hospital on April 28, 2016 and had been handcuffed on his bed in the male ward.

He disappeared from his hospital bed on Saturday night under unclear circumstances leaving behind the handcuffs that were tying him on the hospital bed.

Speaking to the Daily Nation, Thika Nursing Officer Ruth Karani expressed that she learnt about the disappearance of the inmate when she reported to work on Sunday morning.

"I reported to work at 7:30am and the team on night duty informed me that a prisoner who was being guarded by prison warders was missing from his bed," She said.

Karani further asserted that the hospital staff filled an abscondee form and alerted the police and prison authorities who conducted a search but the prisoner could not be traced.

She said that nurses who administered drugs to Wainaina at around 9pm and security officers did not notice anything unusual during the period he is suspected to have escaped.

A patient at the hospital who had reportedly spoken to Wainaina prior to the escape, disclosed that the suspect had requested him to join in the planned escape.

"A few days ago, he had asked me to join him in the planned escape but I refused and told him there was no way he could escape his defilement charges," the patient said.

The patient noted that he went to sleep after taking his last dose of medicine and when he woke up later on, Wainaina was missing from his bed.
