Salary Cut For Top County Officials in Mobile Phone Scam

The Senate has cracked the whip on Kajiado officials over alleged overpricing of accessories bought by the County.

The Senate Public Accounts and Investment Committee has directed the Kajiado Government to effect deductions of MCAs and other officials' salaries over questionable purchase of laptops and mobile phones.

The committee ordered for a Shs 40,000 pay-cut on salaries of the Speaker, Majority and Minority Leaders, clerk, members of the Speaker’s panel and the Whips.

Defending the purchase, the Assemply Clerk Daniel Konyango said that the county bought the phones and iPads at Sh 70,000 each and followed due process in the procurement.

However, the Senators expressed their doubts arguing that the phones in question (Samsung Note IIIs) were selling at a cheaper price than what was indicated by the County Executive.

They further requested the Auditor General to investigate allegations that two MCAs earned double allowances for concurrent events in Nairobi and Ethiopia.

Led by Kajiado Senator Peter Mositet, the law makers hit out at the County Speaker whose office is said to have spent Sh 42,000 on lunch in a day.

County Governments have been criticized for mismanagement of public resources especially in the procurement processes.

Last month, Bungoma and Meru counties hit the headlines over reported purchase of wheelbarrows and curtains at a cost of Sh 109,000 each and Sh 7.8 Milllion respectively.
