Son Of KDF Officer In Custody After Confessing To Being a Member of Al Shabaab

A form three student at St Ignatius Mukumu Boys’ High School in Kakamega is in police custody after confessing to being a member of the outlawed terror group Al Shabaab.

The student allegedly told his teachers that he had been recruited when he had been studying at a school in Nairobi before being transferred to the school in Kakamega.

The troubled boy, who happens to be the son of a KDF officer first made the allegations a few weeks ago.

His parents, thinking he had psychological problems took him to see a counselor after which he returned to school.

He however made the same claims when he got back to school, prompting the school's administration to involve the police.

The student insists that his life is in danger, claiming that other members of Al Shabaab wanted him dead after he murdered one of their members.

Reports indicate that panic ensued in the school after the boy claimed that there were three other students in the school who were also members of the group.

His allegations that the three students could be armed with AK47 riffles and hand grenades forced the school's administration, with the help of the police to conduct a search in the school.

Speaking to The Standard, Western Regional Police Commander Moses Ombati said nothing was recovered after the search.

He added that investigations have been launched into the boy's claims, calling for everyone at the school to remain calm.

A wave of panic has been experienced in many schools following the attack on Garrissa University college that left 148 people dead.

Several terror threats have been made in institutions of learning, some turning out to be false.

Officials have warned that those caught making such threats will be arrested.
