State House Roasts Raila For Attacking CBK

The Presidential Strategic Communication Unit (PSCU) has lampooned CORD leader Raila Odinga for criticizing the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) after it declined to provide him with details about the controversial Eurobond proceeds.

In a statement by PSCU Senior Director Eric Ng'eno, the Unit attacked the Opposition leader stating that Odinga was not interested in getting any information, but has just been using the scam to gain popularity.

“It is clear that Odinga is not interested in facts, information, data or documents because he has publicly refused to receive them. Odinga craves confrontation, farce and crass spectacle, which he obsessively stages to garner attention,” a statement by PSCU read in part.

PSCU was responding to earlier claims by the former Prime Minister who had indicated that he would demand for punishment, after CBK Governor Dr Patrick Njoroge refused to furnish him with documents detailing how the loan was spent.

“An unfortunate effect of Odinga’s crude politics is the undermining of important public institutions. The country cannot afford to sacrifice the credibility of its institutions just to pacify Odinga and stop his tantrums,” read the statement which seemingly defended the highest bank in the land.

State House also questioned why the CORD leader had rejected an invitation by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich to familiarise him with the international loan breakdown and also rebuffed summons by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to shed light on the same.

In December last year, CS Rotich invited Odinga to the Treasury so that the CORD leader could be briefed on the contentious spending of the Eurobond money. Raila, however, responded that he would never step into Rotich's office for any briefing.

He further added that he was too senior to be invited by a Cabinet Secretary, urging Rotich to respect his stature and go to his office instead.

On Wednesday, CBK Governor Dr Njoroge declined to hold a face-to-face meeting with Odinga, following a request by Mr Odinga on April 8, 2016.

The Governor stated that he was not in a position to hold Eurobond discussions with the Opposition leader as the information on the transactions was confidential.
