Covid-19: Retracing Kilifi DG's Movements After Jetting In From Germany

Kilifi Deputy Governor Gideon Saburi has invoked quite the reaction. Currently under forced quarantine after testing positive for the Covid-19 virus, Saburi is staring at a jail term for failing to adhere to recommended safety measures on his return from Germany early in March.

Kenyans.co.ke sought to trace his movements when word on the grapevine indicated that he had conducted official county business as well as frequented several eating establishments after his return. Among the restaurants it is alleged he visited in the company of his driver on March 20, 2020, is the popular Cafesserie Mombasa, located at City Mall, Mombasa.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a county official revealed that after the Deputy Governor jetted back into the country on March 6, from Berlin, he joined various top county officials on March 8 in Rabai, Kilifi County to celebrate International Women Day.

Days after he the joined mourners at a funeral at Bandora in Kambe-Ribe Ward.

His latest alleged public sighting was on March 20 at Cafeserie restaurant in Mombasa. This has however been denied by the renowned establishment.

On a call with Kenyans.co.ke Cafeserie manager refuted claims that the Deputy Governor was in their restaurant and that he interacted with staff and patrons.

“The Deputy governor was actually in City Mall on the morning of March 18, but he did not enter our establishment. We are the anchor tenant in the mall and most often it is assumed that when a VIP is spotted in the mall, they are coming to our place. In this instance that is not the case”, she stated.

Screenshots of conversations doing rounds online claim that he was at Cafesserie and even mingled with other clients for a few hours before leaving for his home.

“As a precautionary measure, all our workers who were on duty last week when the Deputy Governor was around City Mall are currently under self-quarantine for 14 days. In addition to this we are also enforcing strict measures as guided by the Ministry of Health as we are just doing take-aways, with no clients eating in the restaurant”, she disclosed.

Kenyans from all walks of life have been angered by the revelations that the Kilifi Deputy Governor jetted back from German and refused to self-quarantine as required of all nationals jetting back into the country from foreign travels. 

The Coastal region is already on high alert after confirming two positive cases to be the Covid-19 virus. Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has stated that the Deputy Governor will be arrested and charged after a self-quarantine period of 14 days ends, for failure to adhere to the public health act.
