A couple determined to exchange vows at all costs finally tied the knot in a special church event held on Saturday, April 18.

A report by The Standard indicated that Godfrey Mutwiri, 29, and Grace Nkatha, 24, lowered their wedding budget from Ksh240,000 to Ksh40,000.

The two Meru County residents ignored calls by their friends and family to shelve their wedding plans until after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The event was held at  Annexe Hall in Makutano, Meru town, solemnising their five years of dating. Curiously, the couple decided against procuring a custom-made wedding cake, a familiar feature in wedding opting to go with a boiled egg.

“I had told her to pick a date and she decided to pick today which also happens to be my birthday.

“When we were under pressure to postpone the wedding I remembered my father telling me that life could not be postponed. We don't know when this pandemic will end," stated Mutwiri.

The event was attended by roughly eight guests and ran for just 45 minutes.

Among those who attended the event were the couple’s parents, their best couple, a pastor and his wife and two of the couple’s sisters.

“I called Eric Munene who is a good friend and my spiritual mentor for 10 years to ask what I should do. To my surprise, Munene and his wife Mercy Nzuki readily offered to step in," explained Mutwiri on how he managed to go ahead with the plan.

Food was also lacking at the event as the guests only received a banana, a cupcake, a boiled egg and soda as the couple tried as much to comply with the state's directive on curbing the spread of the virus.

“How extravagant a wedding is, does not matter. What is important is the marriage itself,” noted Nkatha.
