Kakamega residents on Saturday, August 8, protested outside Governor Wycliffe Oparanya's office over the demolition of their business structures ahead of Health CS Mutahi Kagwe's visit.

The residents accused Oparanya of pulling down their structures in order to please the visiting CS. They also demanded to know how Covid-19 funds allocated to the county by the national government, had been used.

Led by Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, the protestors demanded to have an audience with the governor, before the tour by the CS commenced.

Malala complained that mass testing was yet to be conducted and that there were inadequate drugs in hospital. He added that no masks had been issued to the residents so far.

"I visit this hospital every week on Monday and afterwards, I send a report to Oparanya, indicating the equipement that is needed. Currently, two or three doctors have coronavirus...Hence, I have decided that boardroom meetings are not working and that is why we are here," Malala lamented.

Additionally, Malala accused the governor of failing to distribute food that had already been donated by a number of organisations.

Police officers tried to disperse the crowd but their efforts bore no fruits.

Oblivious of the happenings, the governor, Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa and Kagwe continued with their tour as planned.

Photos shared online by Oparanya showed the trio at the Mumias Level 4 Hospital, where the governor stated a number of covid-19 patients had received treatment.

"Mumias Level 4 Hospital is one of my legacy projects. The hospital is a Covid-19 treatment center. I am proud the hospital has successfully treated over 16 Covid-19 patients," wrote the governor on Twitter.

CS Kagwe has been touring the counties and is currently in the Nyanza region on a four-day tour to assess the impact of Covid-19 in Kisii, Homa Bay, Kisumu and Bomet counties and their preparedness.
