Police in Mombasa on Sunday, August 9, stormed the venue of a press conference organised by former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar and Nyali MP Mohammed Ali alias Moha Jicho Pevu.

The presser was sheduled to be held at Renaissance Centre, in Kizingo area of Mombasa County as the leaders sought to address issues on Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), revenue sharing formula, the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and the state of the country.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Mombasa County Deputy County Commander Joseph Chebii revealed that the presser was briefly halted due to large turn out.

"The presser went on eventually. We were just restricting the people to the required number because of the Covid-19 rules.

"A good number of people had turned out so we just restricted them to 15, the members of the press were so many," noted the Deputy County Commander.

Chebii added that the meeting was also set to discuss the hygiene of the county in curbing Covid-19 and distribution of revenue collected from the Mombasa port.

Hassan Omar complained of double standards with some of the meetings in the county allowing up to 50 people at a go.

He urged the policemen who were blocking the presser that the matters they were set to discuss would also affect them directly.

"What we want to talk about is totally for your benefit, trust me, listen keenly, grab a seat and sit here," urged the Mombasa Senator.

Back in June, Omar and Mohamed Ali issued a press briefing demanding that the beneficiaries of SGR be named by the national government.

Omar urged National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi to allow the impeachment motion against Transport CS James Macharia to proceed.

Ali who sponsored the motion to have Macharia impeached stated that there was no way the port of Mombasa was going to be controlled by Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho alone.
