Huge boulders on Wednesday night started falling in the middle of the road at the Mai Mahiu escarpment raising fears of accidents occurring in the area.

Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LODCA) reporting on the incident remarked that transport logistics companies were incurring losses.

This was due to a near complete standstill of traffic in the area forcing truck drivers to spend the night in the region.

Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) responding to the scenes urged relevant stakeholders to act quickly and prevent an imminent tragedy.

Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA)  was requested to clear the huge rocks falling on the road to ensure the movement of vehicles.

“A warning sign post will advise drivers in good time,” MAK advised KeNHA.

The Authority did not immediately respond to the requests issued by LODCA and MAK.

One of the huge rocks covered almost an entire section of the road forcing cars to go offroad so as to circumvent the boulder.

While small cars were able to do so, the hilly area made it almost impossible for trucks to make a similar move causing a heavy traffic jam.

This happened a day after Narok South Deputy County Commissioner Flex Kisalu warned of possible landslides in the region.

The Kenya Meteorology Department has further warned that several areas in the country could experience mudslides due to the ongoing heavy downpour.

On Wednesday, April 24, Kenya Met Department Director David Gikungu warned that for late April and early May, Kenyans should brace for more heavy rains that could uproot trees and cause floods and mudslides.
