Property in Nairobi County was destroyed on Saturday night through to Sunday after heavy rain was experienced on the night of April 20.

Roads across the county were flooded leading to traffic snarl-ups with some vehicles being submerged. Based on videos that circulated online, the most affected road was Namanga Road in Kitengela.

A bus full of passengers was also depicted losing control on a flooded road before it fell on its side. No fatalities were reported by the time of publishing of this article.

On some roads, fallen trees obstructed motorists, causing traffic, while overflowing water from drains flooded residential areas.

This heavy downpour comes after a warning from the Kenya Meteorological Department that had been issued earlier in the week.

According to the forecast, other areas which were expected to experience the heavy rainfall included; the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, the Coast and the Northeastern Kenya.

Also, between April 16 and April 22, some areas were still expected to experience high daytime temperatures averaging above 30 degrees.

"High average daytime (maximum) temperature of more than 30 degrees will be experienced in several counties including Turkana, Marbasit, Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, Garissa, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale.

Additionally, within this timeframe, some areas are also expected to experience average night temperatures between 100 degrees and 200 degrees. Some of these regions include; those of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley.

Over the past months, the country has experienced heavy rainfall with deaths being reported and property also being destroyed.

On April 9,  a family of four was buried alive inside their house in Narok County after heavy rainfall resulted in a mudslide.

Kenyans have been urged by the Kenya Red Cross, the Ministry of Interior and other bodies to be cautious during this heavy rainfall season. Those in lower lying areas have been asked to move to higher grounds.

"The risk of significant flooding in various parts of the Country has put the Government on high alert. Accordingly, the public is hereby notified to exercise caution, plan their movements and avoid risky behaviour on moving waters," read a statement issued by the Ministry earlier in the week.
