President William Ruto has revealed that the dualling of the Muthaiga-Kiambu-Ndumberi road will kickstart in February 2026.
Speaking during a church service in Karure, Kiambu County, on Sunday, December 14, Ruto said the government had already secured funding and put in place other necessary plans for the road’s construction.
According to the Head of State, he will personally launch the construction of the Ksh22 billion project next year.
Ruto said that the expansion of the road will be fundamental in easing traffic congestion and improving mobility between Nairobi and Kiambu Counties.
"We have already finalised all the plans for dualling the Muthaiga- Kiambu- Ndumberi road, because many people living in Kiambu do their businesses and work in Nairobi," Ruto said.
"There is a lot of traffic on that route because it is supposed to take around 20 minutes to get to Nairobi, but because of the congestion, people get stuck on the route for 40 minutes. Next year, when I'm ready, I will come to launch the project," he added.
The cabinet approved the expansion of the road from a two-lane highway into a dual carriageway on Tuesday, November 11.
According to the cabinet, the project will include bypasses, loops, and access roads to increase capacity and reduce journey times.
Furthermore, to guarantee accessibility, the project will feature lanes for non-motorised transport and commuter facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
"The dualling is part of the government’s broader effort to modernise Nairobi’s metropolitan transport network in line with Kenya Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals on infrastructure and mobility," the dispatch read.
The announcement by the president comes two days after he revealed that the government will also construct a 60-kilometre expressway from Nairobi City to Thika town in Kiambu County.
The president, who revealed this while addressing Kenyans during the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium on Friday, December 12, revealed that the expressway would be constructed to complement the existing Thika road.
Ruto noted that the construction of the expressway is expected to kickstart in 2026. The road is also expected to facilitate easier and faster movement of people and goods between the two countries.
"A lot of Kenyans live in Thika, and the current Thika road is very congested, and there are a lot of vehicles using the Thika road. I want to announce that next year, we will construct an expressway from Thika to Nairobi at Museum Hill," Ruto said.
