Three Kenyans have embarked on an ambitious walk from Nairobi to Mombasa in a remarkable display of endurance and purpose to raise awareness.
The walk, which began in Nairobi, is part of a broader mission to raise funds for a sustainable water system at Sasura Girls School in Marsabit County.
Since the school currently relies on trucked water, health has reportedly been hampered, particularly because the institution houses at least 250 schoolgirls.
The trio now hope that the 18-day journey will go a long way in mobilising resources and drumming up public support to ensure the school has permanent access to clean water.
By Saturday, December 13, the trip marked day 12 of the 18-day journey, making it to Voi towards Maungu. At this point, they had covered 331 kilometres with an estimated six days of walking remaining.
One of the most remarkable points of their journey was walking through the Tsavo National Park, a region known for its lion population.
Despite the dangers, the team remained committed to their cause, albeit with the help of game rangers within the park.
Dubbed "What Must Be Done Has to be Done", the walk draws inspiration from the legacy of men who chose perseverance even in the face of hardship.
Besides restoring access to clean, sustainable water in the Garissa-based school, the walk also aims to promote physical well-being alongside spiritual commitment, as well as demonstrating discipline, endurance, and purpose, particularly among men.
The trio's story had similarities to that of Ian Gichohi Mwangi, who embarked on an ambitious 10,000-kilometre journey from Cairo, Egypt, to Cape Town in South Africa on a bicycle in late 2024.
Ian's goal was simple: he wanted to cycle to raise enough school fees for 100 boys and girls, with each student expected to be allocated Ksh1 million.
Having started his journey in November, Gichohi covered an impressive 4,000 kilometres of the 10,800 kilometres by the end of November. By December 31, he had arrived in Cape Town and was ready for the journey back to his home country.
