The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has said that all Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examiners will be paid coordination fees before leaving their respective examination centres.
While refuting claims that the agency has not paid teachers who have completed marking various exams, KNEC, late on Sunday, December 14, said that all examiners who have completed marking their assigned papers and left examination centres have been paid.
According to the council, some of the examiners, including those who were marking the Physics Paper 2, Biology Paper 2, Agriculture Paper 1, Chemistry Paper 3, Biology Paper 1, Agriculture Paper 2, Computer Studies Paper 2, and Biology Paper 3, have already been paid their allowances.
"Our attention has been drawn to reports that some 2025 KCSE examiners have left the marking centres without being paid their coordination fees. We wish to clarify that all examiners who have completed the marking exercise and left the marking centres have been fully paid their coordination dues," KNEC stated.
"All examiners for all papers will be paid the coordination fees before they leave the marking centres. KNEC is committed to Quality Educational Assessment and Credibility," it added.
The clarification comes days after more than 800 examiners marking the English Paper 2 exam at the Mary Hills Girls' High School held demonstrations to demand their pay.
Videos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke show the angry teachers gathered and demanding to be paid their allowances. The teachers were heard shouting, "Things are not good; we should be paid now."
The examiners who began the marking exercise three weeks ago said that they will not participate in the marking process until the government pays them their allowances.
The government was supposed to pay the teachers a total of Ksh5,000 in coordination fees, according to them.
They, however, claimed that the government was yet to pay them, with uncertainty on whether they would be paid once they left the examination centres.
The KCSE 2025 marking is expected to run until Monday, December 15.
Last month, the Ministry of Education confirmed that the KCSE results would be issued in January 2026.
