Police from the traffic department in Matungulu, Machakos County on Sunday warned motorists to avoid the bridge at Joska on Kangundo Road.
The existence of a visible crack at the Joska bridge was reported which was subsequently cited as a potential hazard for those plying the route.
According to a police report seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the traffic police requested motorists to seek alternative routes until the situation was remedied.
“Members of the Public well advised to keep off that area until normalcy is restored” read the statement in part”.
Reportedly, the crack was stated to have formed as a result of the Athi River frequently overflowing the bridge.
The report was filed at the traffic base on Saturday evening at 07:30 after the crack deepened.
However, the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) was yet to issue a statement on the matter by the time of publishing this article.
The police, however, stated that a progress report on the fixing of the road would be issued to motorists in due time.
River Athi broke its banks during the week, with floods engulfing areas in Machakos County such as Kinanie Bridge and sections of Syokimau.
On Sunday April 21, Machakos Governor, Wavinya Ndeti issued an evacuation notice for those living in areas close to the swollen river.
She further cautioned residents to demolish structures constructed along waterways in the county.
“Those who have walls built along riparian land are instructed to demolish them, otherwise we shall demolish them ourselves,” cautioned Wavinya.
