Motorists and passengers travelling to Nairobi and Mombasa cities have been told to use alternative routes due to flooding on the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.

In a statement released by the Kenya Red Cross on Sunday, April 21, it was revealed that the busy highway had become impassable in the Sultan Hamud area between Emali and Salama.

As such, motorists are now forced to use the Machakos route which is longer.

“Heavy rainfall has affected some parts of Mombasa Road users have been urged to exercise caution while travelling along the Sultan Hamud area or to use an alternative route via the Makindu-Wote-Machakos route,” motorists were advised.

In the new advisory, motorists from Nairobi heading to Mombasa will have to branch at Kyumbi Junction and head to Machakos so as to avoid the Sultan Hamud flooded section.

Alternatively, the motorists can branch off at Konza and head to Katumani to connect to Wote.

Motorists travelling from Mombasa, are supposed to branch off at Makindu, pass through Wote Town and head to Katumani or Machakos.

There are fears that the Wote route could also become impassable due to the rising water volumes in the Kaiti River.

Should the Kaiti River break its banks, it will be impossible for motorists to connect between Wote and Katumani or Machakos.

This comes at a time when Kenya Met has announced that the country will continue experiencing heavy downpours in the month of April.

Mombasa Road is also at risk of becoming impassable in the Athi River stretch due to the floods being experienced.

Kenyans have been told to exercise caution while driving through flooded roads.
