Residents of Kilimani suburb in Nairobi were evacuated on Sunday, April 21, following heavy flooding in the area.

The leafy suburb was one of the areas in Nairobi that bore the brunt following a heavy downpour that started on Saturday evening through to Sunday morning.

In Kilimani, the most affected area was Elite Court along Ole Dume Road.

As fears of housing and vehicles being submerged, residents were asked to move to safer grounds until the water receded.

The evacuation happened at the time when Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) warned of possible flooding in the Mbagathi area.

According to KURA, Raila Odinga Road was increasingly becoming impassable due to the heavy downpour.

“Our technical team are on the ground to ascertain how best we can mitigate the effects of this flooding on our roads,” KURA remarked of the situation.

Kenya Meteorology Department (Kenya Met) warned Nairobi residents that the rains would not subside anytime soon.

“Keep those umbrellas handy and stay prepared for wet weather throughout the week,” Nairobi residents were warned.

In Kajiado County, there were also heightened fears of flooding after a bridge in Kitengela collapsed.

On Saturday, April 20, a matatu was partially submerged in the Nyayo area, Nairobi, due to the ongoing heavy downpour.

Apart from Nairobi, Kenya Met has announced that heavy downpours should be expected in Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, South Eastern Lowlands, Coast, and North Eastern regions.
