Kisumu County Government Anyang' Nyong'o on Sunday, May 5, revealed that huge sections of the region had flooded with seven villages already submerged.

In a statement, Nyong'o stated that more than 600 people have been marooned in their homes, business premises, health facilities and on the roads.

Additionally, the Ahero bridge on the busy Kisumu- Nairobi-Kisii-Homa Bay and Migori have been reported to be flooded, with the whole town of Ahero also flooded.

"Seven villages in Ombeyi location are completely submerged in water," Nyong'o further stated.

"We are working closely with the National government through our Multi-Agency committee to help our people. We sincerely thank the Coast Guard and the Kenya Red Cross Society whose teams are already at Ahero to help in the rescue mission."

Additionally, it was reported that the County Government of Kisumu was making arrangements to hire boats to help ferry the affected households to evacuation centres.

A medical Camp was set up at Bunde Dispensary as the County Government appealed for additional help in the form of rescue choppers from the Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Wildlife Services, and Kenya Forest Service.

Other areas in Kisumu County that have flooded include the whole of Muhoroni Town as well as huge sections of the Nyakach region.

"Kabonyo Kanyagwal, Ombaka and Sango Rota areas are adversely affected by the backflow from Lake Victoria," Nyong'o added.

Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) speaking on the matter urged residents in the region to be cautious due to the overtopping of River Nyando Bridge along Ahero - Kisumu Road.

"The public is advised to exercise patience and follow directions from the police officers and traffic marshals manning the road," KeNHA warned.
