Heavy transport snarl-up was witnessed in Kisumu on Sunday morning after heavy floods ravaged the area rendering the road impassable.

The situation was caused by the overflowing of the banks of River Nyando following heavy rainfall in the region.

According to reports, the traffic jam stretched for several kilometres, forcing motorists to remain stuck on the road for hours with vehicles unable to move.

In light of this, motorists appealed to the county government to provide alternative routes for accessing Kisumu City.

Pedestrians and cyclists were urged to steer clear of the bridge within the town, as it posed a potential hazard.

The River Nyando overflowed its banks in Ahero on Saturday evening, inundating several houses and causing transportation disruptions in the area.

However, as of the time of publication, neither the government nor the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) had issued directives to motorists.

Ahero town serves as a crucial transport hub, situated at the intersection of the Nairobi-Kisumu (A104) and Kisii-Kisumu (A1) highways.

The heavy traffic snarl-up comes hours after KeNHA issued a directive for the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway warning of risks at the area near Delamare Stopover.

According to KeNHA, the area posed a risk given that the Malewa River which flows through the area was almost overflowing.

Motorists were requested to exercise caution on the road following the possible flooding in the region.

KeNHA has continued to request members of the public to be mindful of the potential flooding dangers that could lead to traffic incidences on the roads.
