About 20 families in Kirinyaga County were on Tuesday evacuated after an apartment they were residing in developed cracks.

The residents were forced to remove their belongings from the apartment in the middle of the night after some of the tenants noticed cracks in the inner rooms of the building.

The apartment owner was quickly notified about the incident and rushed to the scene to verify the claims and help in the evacuation process.

During the evacuation process, parts of the apartment walls began to crumble, posing a huge risk to some of the tenants who were still in the process of removing their property from the building.

According to reports, the cracks were caused after the apartment walls got soaked in the continued rains experienced in the region.

Following the mid-night evacuation, the affected families were urged to seek alternative shelters to allow for assessment of the building.

The incident comes barely hours after a 5-storey building located along Naivasha Road in the Uthiru area of Nairobi collapsed, trapping several people.

Following the incident, firefighters and officers from the Kenya Red Cross Society were dispatched to the scene to help in the rescue process.

A team of officers from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) were also sent to the scene with sniff dogs to aid in the search process.

While confirming the incident, Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja revealed that the four missing people had been saved and that the 34 residents could be accounted for.

"The Nairobi City County Government is providing immediate humanitarian aid for the night and plans to provide further support and facilitate reintegration," Sakaja announced.

In its report, the Kenya Red Cross confirmed those nursing serious injuries were rushed to the hospital while those with minor injuries were treated at the scene.
