Residents of the Piai Mwea area in Kirinyaga County have raised concerns after a three-storey building collapsed on Tuesday.

Witnesses reported that the incident occurred in the morning hours after the area experienced heavy rains the entire night.

Speaking to journalists, Ken Mugo, a boda boda rider who operates around the area explained that the owner of the building halted construction two months ago.

He expressed his surprise at seeing the rubble claiming that when he passed through the area on Monday night the building was still standing tall.

"I cannot believe the building has collapsed. At first, I thought it was an earthquake," he told the media.

"It was raining when I heard a bang and I thought it was a thunderstorm only to find a collapsed building today morning," another resident added.

Photos circulating on social media showed residents going through the rubble, trying to rescue anyone who might have been trapped in the building.

Residents intimated that one of the persons trapped in the rubble was the security guard who manned the building every night.

Kenyans online called for the engineer responsible for the building to be brought to book and explain the cause of the incident.

"The engineer who was responsible for the construction should explain why this happened under his watch," read some of the comments online.

" I bet the incident is caused by knowing someone who is cheaper."

The National Construction Authority (NCA) has yet to issue a statement on the matter.

The incident comes after another building in Kabete, Kiambu County collapsed in early November. Residents in the area questioned the lack of oversight and regulation, especially since the building had been showing cracks before the collapse.

No fatalities were recorded in the incident.
