At least six people are feared dead following a multi-vehicle accident along Mombasa Road at the Konza City area in Machakos County on Thursday night.
The crash involved a shuttle headed to Loitoktok, a lorry, and a Tahmeed bus travelling from Mombasa. Authorities indicated that all the reported casualties were passengers aboard the shuttle.
Several other passengers sustained serious injuries, with some victims reportedly trapped inside the wreckage while others were left lying on the ground awaiting rescue.
Witnesses at the scene described the accident as severe, stating that the vehicles were extensively damaged following the impact, which occurred around 11pm on Friday, January 2.
Motorists and bystanders raised alarm over what they described as a delayed emergency response, blaming the Machakos County Government for the slow dispatch of ambulances to the scene.
Eyewitnesses urgently called for ambulances, warning that swift medical attention was critical to save lives, particularly for victims trapped in the wreckage.
Emergency responders, including police officers, later arrived at the scene and began coordinating rescue efforts as traffic along the busy highway was temporarily disrupted.
The injured were later rushed to nearby hospitals, although the exact number of those hospitalised was not immediately confirmed.
Police have launched investigations to establish the cause of the accident and how the three vehicles collided along the busy Konza City stretch, Mukaa Sub-County Police Commander Hussein Abduba said.
Voi Accident
In a separate incident, a grisly road accident involving a Janam Bus occurred at the Miesenyi area in Voi along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway.
The bus was travelling from Busia through Nairobi to Mombasa when the accident happened, leaving several passengers injured.
The exact number of casualties had not been established by the time of publication.
Images and videos obtained from the scene showed the bus lying on its side, with some passengers seen outside the vehicle as bystanders moved in to assist.
