Mombasa Ranked 3rd Globally as Best Holiday Destination

Mombasa has emerged as the third-best tourist destination in the world in 2024 due to its affordability according to a survey conducted by Post Office. 

In the Post Office Travel Money survey, tourists were cited as approving Mombasa as a preferred holiday destination due to a 7 per cent recorded drop in prices of key items. 

Some of the items sampled included; Coffee, Beer, Soft Drinks, Wine and Mineral Water. 

The survey further sampled prices of Suncream, Insect repellant and Course evening meal for two persons.

Insect repellant which is a necessity for most tourists was found to be the cheapest in Kenya retailing at Ksh127. 

This was in contrast to Downtown Dubai, Dubai,  where the same product was found to be retailing at Ksh1,636. 

The 7 per cent drop in key items saw Mombasa climb one place up from the 2023 ranking only bested by Hoi An in Vietnam and Cape Town in South Africa. 

Tokyo, Japan was ranked fourth followed by Algarve, Portugal and Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt respectively. 

Other global cities that made it to the top ten list included: Sunny Beach in Bulgaria, Kuta in Mali, Marmaris in Turkey and Paphos in Cyprus. 

A Cup of filtered coffee sold in local cafes and bars in Mombasa, Kenya was found to be retailing at Ksh219. 

Mombasa was also found to boast one of the cheapest beers in the world with a 330ml being sold to tourists at Ksh328.

A 3-course evening meal for two persons inclusive of a bottle of house wine cost tourists Ksh6,248.

This was in contrast to Tamarindo in Costa Rica where the same cost Ksh17,569.
