Former President Mwai Kibaki's son, Jimmy Kibaki on Wednesday resigned as the deputy leader of The New Democrats Party, a position he had held for three years.
In a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Jimmy sought to relinquish his position to focus on urgent family and business matters.
He explained that he made the decision after a meticulous thought process since his family has been involved in politics for a long time.
The younger Kibaki has until now been assumed to be the heir to his father's political throne after the late president ruled Kenya for a decade.
"Over the past 33 years, I have been intimately involved in various political initiatives in this country, including the formation and management of various political parties," he stated.
"At this time in my life, it has become apparent to me that I need to devote all my time to urgent family and business matters that require my full attention. Consequently, and after a lot of thought, consideration, and soul-searching, it is incumbent upon me to tender my immediate resignation as the TND Deputy Party Leader."
In his statement, the 60-year-old recounted his entry into politics in 1991, when he joined like-minded people to form the Democratic Party of Kenya.
"Together we built this organisation into a respected political party that performed admirably in the 1992 and 1997 general elections," he stated.
Jimmy shifted to the National Alliance Party of Kenya which later merged with the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) to form the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) in September 2002.
The founders included; Mwai Kibaki, Raila Odinga, Charity Ngilu and the late Vice President Kijana Wamalwa.
Led by Mwai Kibaki, the coalition captured the presidency in the 2002 general election.
"I have also been involved in the creation and management of the Party of National Unity (PNU). More recently, in 2021, I joined the New Democrats (TND) political party where I was appointed the Deputy Party leader," Jimmy indicated.
Following his father's death in April 2022, Jimmy promised to make public his political ambitions and reveal if he would follow in his father's footsteps.
"Now that I am the political face of the family I might consider joining politics. We will discuss after the sendoff maybe next week we will have a detailed sit-down," he stated during a media interview in 2022.
