President Uhuru Kenyatta Sends Condolence Message Over Moi Girls Fire

President Uhuru Kenyatta has sent a message of condolence to the family and friends of the students affected by a fire that left eight students dead at Moi Girls School in Nairobi.

In a statement sent to the media, Kenyatta stated that he was deeply saddened and pained by the news of last night's fire.

The President condoled with those who had lost loved ones and wished quick recovery to more than 10 students who had been hospitalised with some suffering serious injuries.

“The young women touched by this tragedy are the best of us: diligent, committed to learning, and prepared to make a difference in the life of the country they love. I mourn with the families who have lost loved ones, and I pray that those injured will recover quickly and fully,” he stated.

He assured the families affected, as well as the school, that the government would investigate the matter fully, and act appropriately so that this sort of tragedy doesn't recur.

“I pray that the departed will rest in eternal peace, and I pray that all those touched by this tragedy will find consolation and encouragement in God's grace,” he concluded.

On Saturday morning, eight students lost their lives in the fire that broke out in one of the dormitories between 2 am and 3 am.

According to one of the teachers at the school, the affected dormitory had been occupied by Form One students.

Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i who arrived at the scene stated that 10 students had been hospitalised.

Following the incident, the school was closed indefinitely but the Form Four students will resume after a week to prepare for the national exams.
