President William Ruto on Tuesday pledged Ksh132 million to support humanitarian efforts in Sudan where civil war has killed thousands and displaced millions of people.

The amount is part of the Ksh263 billion ($2 billion) the international community has mobilised to push for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi who attended the International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan on behalf of President Ruto rallied Kenya's support for the mission.

"Kenya insists on immediate ceasefire as well as the opening of all borders and cross lines to enable rapid delivery of the much-needed humanitarian aid to the Sudanese people," Mudavadi noted.

The conference was convened by France, Germany and the European Union with the agenda of the meeting focused on
finding solutions for sustainable peace in the war-torn country.

According to the Foreign Affairs CS, the participants expressed their grave concern about the worsening conflict and violation of human rights and the impact of the crisis.

The parties reiterated the call to the warring parties to cease hostilities and abide by the commitment from the Jeddah talks, co-facilitated by the AU and IGAD in May 2023

"Kenya's position is a one united coordinated initiative building on the Jeddah platform as the best way forward," the Prime CS stated on behalf of Kenya.

"Kenya remains committed to supporting the democratic aspiration of the Sudanese people," he added.

Stakeholders also called for an immediate halt to foreign actors providing armed support to the warring parties or engaging in actions that have heightened tensions.

The Sudan crisis erupted in April 2023 following a violent power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Millions of Sudanese people are internally displaced or have become refugees in the neighbouring countries.
