Two police officers were on Friday, April 19, accosted and robbed by armed thugs shortly after reporting for duty at the County Commissioner's office in Vihiga County.

According to a police report obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the female Administration Police Officer alongside her colleague were approached by two armed thugs seeking to gain access.

However, the two officers, who were manning the Commissioner's office, denied the duo entry leading to an altercation.

One of the suspects attacked the female officer with a sharp object, inflicting serious injuries on the right side of her head.

Her colleague, who tried to intervene, was also hit on the head with a stone.

Following the altercation, the thugs seized the rifle belonging to the female cop which was loaded with one magazine and 25 rounds of ammunition.

The thugs fled the scene, leaving the two injured officers in their wake.

Moments later, the Vihiga Sub-County Police Commander, the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) Commander and the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Mbale visited the scene to process and document what transpired.

The two officers were rushed to Vihiga County Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention.

"The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers are in pursuit of the robbers," read part of the report.

The incident paints a picture of the rise in insecurity across the country, with thugs going to the extent of attacking police officers.

According to the latest report by the National Council for Administration Justice (NCAJ), 97,301 crimes were reported in the financial year 2022/23, compared to 85,539 in 2021/22.
