Activist Boniface Mwangi Shares Wife's Horrible Experience At the Gynaecologist

Following an expose of Mugo Wa Wairimu, a fake doctor who allegedly sedated and raped female patients, Kenyans have been recounting their worst experiences with gynaecologists online.

Activist Boniface Mwangi shared his wife's experience with a city gynaecologist on Facebook.

In the post, Boniface narrates how his wife's life was put at risk in 2009 by one Dr Stephen Maina, a gynaecologist at the Family Care Medical Centre, located at Phoenix House, Kenyatta Avenue, Nairobi.

His wife, who was four months pregnant at the time, was told that she needed an evacuation - a surgical procedure to remove the contents in her uterus - after scans revealed that the baby had no cardiac activity.

According to Boniface, after the procedure that was performed by Dr Maina, his wife returned for check up when she developed complications. The doctor recommended tablets to help with the bleeding she had been experiencing following the surgery.

Boniface claims that the tablets did not work and a few days later, his wife had to be admitted at Nairobi Hospital following heavy bleeding and cramping.

A different gynaecologist said that the first evacuation had not been properly conducted and that she would have to undergo another evacuation to remove remains of the foetus.

Boniface said he confronted Dr Maina the next day asking for an explanation over the failed procedure, only for the doctor to get angry and kick him out.

"He told us there was nowhere we could take him. That l should count myself lucky since my wife was alive. “We take women to theatre and they die, that’s why hospitals have mortuaries,” Boniface quoted the words used by the doctor.

He said that he reported the matter to the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist’s Board (KMPDB) on June 26, 2009, and that a disciplinary board was convened in 2012 to hear the case where the doctor admitted the mortuary remarks.

Boniface says that they were told that the verdict would be out in 21 days but upto date they have never known the verdict.

In the post, Boniface accused the board of failing to follow up on complaints by Kenyans against rogue doctors.

He urged the board to create public forums for educating the public on how to file complaint cases against such doctors and how to make anonymous reports.

Boniface Mwangi is a well known activist married and is a father of three children.
