A matatu driver from Kiambu was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for causing an accident that left two people serioulsy injured.
Zacharia Mburu had been accused of driving dangerously along the Kikuyu Southern bypass, causing the grissly accident.
Kikuyu Chief Magistrate James Ogweno on Friday found Mburu guilty of the offence committed on June 24 this year.
According to a local publication, Hivi Sasa, witness accounts indicated that Mburu had been driving at a high speed before the accident occured.
He is said to have ignored complaints from passengers on his driving.
Mburu was reportedly under the influence of khat when he hit a pick up car, before speeding off from the scene of the accident.
A few meters on, the matatu wa s involved in another accident that left some passengers injured.
Some of the court attendants lauded the ruling, saying it would serve as an example to other reckless drivers who endanger the lives of passengers with their driving.
It comes even as The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) continues with its campaign to get passengers to speak up when their driver is driving dangerously.
Early May, the NTSA in patnership with National Road Safety Trust launched a road safety campaign dubbed of Zusha Campaign.
The campaign is aimed at persuading passengers to speak out against rogue PSV drivers and intervene in instances of over speeding and reckless driving.
The campaign is being executed through messages on stickers and social media sites in an effort to reach as many passengers.
