Government, City Hall Clash Over Uhuru Park Grounds

The National Government and City Hall have issued contradictory reports over who will occupy the Uhuru Park grounds on Madaraka Day.

Government spokesman Eric Kiraithe on Monday afternoon announced that both CORD and Prayers Beyond Boundaries Ministries would not be allowed to use the grounds on Wednesday, June 1.

"The National Security Advisory Committee convened earlier today to evaluate the security threats emanating from a double booking of the grounds. Following lengthy deliberations...it was decided that neither of the parties who had reserved the premises will be permitted to use the grounds on the material day," Kiraithe stated.

He further stated that Nyayo Stadium shall also remain closed on Wednesday and no functions will be held there.

Earlier in the day, Nairobi County Secretary Robert Ayisi announced that CORD had the right to use Uhuru Park on Madaraka Day since they paid and got necessary approval.

Mr Ayisi affirmed that they had written to the religious group revoking the scheduled prayers on June 1 adding that the Ministry led by Lucy Wa Ngunjiri paid for the grounds before approval by the County Government.

"For avoidance of doubt and confusion, we would like to categorically state that it is the approval to CORD which is valid and effective," Dr Ayisi said.

It now remains to be seen what will happen on the fateful day as the Opposition has vowed to carry on with their plans.

Speaking in Mombasa on Sunday, Odinga affirmed that they had no intentions of causing chaos but to preach peace and seek truth, justice and reconciliation for the country.
