It's Now Official, Teacher's Strike Begins

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) on Wednesday afternoon officially declared the start of the teachers' strike.

KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion emphatically stated that the Union would not hold any talks with the government and neither would they accept anything less than the pay increase awarded by the court.

This is after the Teacher's Service Commission filed a petition at the Supreme Court wanting a review of the 50-60 per cent pay rise that had been ruled in favour of the teachers by the Industrial Court.

The Supreme Court directed TSC to serve papers to the parties involved including KNUT, Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET), Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) and the Attorney-General.

KNUT however had asked the court not to respond to TSC's plea until the commission complies with the court order.

TSC’s latest application seeking review of the ruling will be heard before September 22.

Meanwhile, the teachers' employer - TSC - has reportedly termed the strike 'illegal and unprotected', warning teachers who boycott work of consequences.
