VIDEO: Fake Mike Sonko Arrested

A man who has allegedly been conning Kenyans using a fake Facebook account bearing the Nairobi Senator's has finally been charged in court.

Stanley Kariuki had created a parody account of Senator Mike Sonko through which he claimed to be offering motorbikes to the youth. He would then ask those interested to send him Sh1000 as 'logbook transfer fee' for the motorbikes.

On Thursday Sonko shared two videos; one capturing the court session and another showing the suspect confessing to having been behind the fraudulent initiative after being arrested.

While appearing in court, Mr Kariuki sought to defend himself by challenging the Senator to prove that he was indeed the suspect running the fake Facebook account.

Sonko went ahead to submit before the judge that he had a recording of the man apologising and crying for forgiveness before being arraigned in court.

“You were lucky to be arrested by the Police, we could have lynched you,” said Sonko.

In the video captured after Kariuki was arrested the suspect confesses to having received Sh18,000 from his scam.

The Nairobi Senator has since cautioned social media users against such fraudsters and advised the public how to identify his account.

“Beware of fake MIKE SONKOS FB ACCOUNTS they also bear my images but the only difference my official genuine account is verified and authenticated with a blue tick by FB and has over 751,000 followers. Do not send Mpesa to any number. I do not offer any loans or motorbikes. Enjoy the rest of your day” [sic]. Sonko posted
