Prior to his arrest, the officers were filmed breaking into the offices through the main door. This was after the businessman failed to surrender himself to the police who had pitched camp at the offices overnight.

While speaking to the media in the morning hours of Tuesday, January 18, the businessman stated that he had instructed his lawyers to handle the matter stating that police wanted him to record a statement at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters.

Wanjigi was being sought over the controversy around the acquisition of the land where his company is located. The land is located along the high-value General Mathenge Lane in Westlands, Nairobi.

Despite a warrant of arrest being issued, Wanjigi through his lawyers, obtained orders barring the police from arresting him.

After his arrest, Wanjigi stated that his apprehension was a case of witch-hunt, adding that it has nothing to do with the land case that he was being implicated in. He accused the police of ignoring a court order barring his arrest even as he displayed it to the media.

"This is persecution and it began very many years ago, all the way back to 2014 when the Jubilee government got to power," he stated.

Earlier, supporters of the businessman cum politician, clashed with the police after they camped outside his offices demanding that the officers leave the business premises. The officers had to lobby teargas at to disperse the supporters.

Wanjigi's father was also denied entry to the premises even as the armed officers continued to guard the gates of the premises.

In an earlier interview, the businessman accused the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Raila Odinga, of betraying him. He stated that he was facing wrongful prosecution from the state citing a similar scenario during the aftermath of the 2017 General Election.

“Let them just come out and say it. Uhuru Kenyatta just come out and say it. And to imagine that my friend Raila... Raila Amolo Odinga whom I was almost lost my life for, is sitting with him (Uhuru) somewhere probably enjoying this spectacle is the saddest thing of all,” Wanjigi stated then.
