Allan Kipng'eno, a student from the University of Kabianga, is chasing his dream of making a fully functioning helicopter.

On Sunday, March 10, the young innovator impressed residents of Belgut, Kericho County after showcasing a milestone achievement— a near complete helicopter — he built from scratch.

The handmade aircraft is currently undergoing the final touches before Kipng'eno can say it's ready. The innovator was praised by residents and Kenyans who saw him at work in a viral video.

Kenyans.co.ke on Monday, March 11 reached out to the young man who shared insights on why he embarked on the project and his passion for aviation in general.

During the interview, Kipng'eno revealed that he was pursuing a course in Agriculture and Education but he harboured a deep-rooted passion for the aviation industry.

He added that he began taking the first steps towards building an aircraft in 2019  right after completing high school. Since then, he has been working towards ensuring that the aircraft finally takes off.

"I left high school in 2018 and began working on the design. I later joined campus but did not have the funds to pursue my aviation dream," he stated.

Kipng'eno explained that he was looking for a sponsor to help actualise his dream and build a functioning helicopter.

He added that even without the external funding, he was committed to making his dream come true. He explained and further revealed this was his seventh attempt at building a helicopter.

The student noted that he uses scrap metal and other materials which are available to him. He, however, complained that the lack of a better engine has derailed his progress.

Kipng'eno revealed that currently, the helicopter can not fly due to the type of engine fitted.

Despite the setbacks, Kipng'eno has impressed a large number of Kenyans who commended him for overcoming his obstacles and his resolute determination to pursue what he wants.

Additionally, Kenyans called upon the local government and relevant institutions to sponsor Kipng'eno to ensure his design is fully functional and mentor him to inspire more Kenyans.

Notably, Kipng'eno is not the only Kenyan who has attempted to make a plane. Geoffery Otieno from Siaya County also built a chopper in 2022 using scrap metal.

Otieno developed an interest in making planes as a child but lacked the funds to actualise his dream.
