A sombre mood engulfed Nakuru County as several people are feared dead after an accident involving a head-on collision between a Passenger Service Vehicle (PSV) and a trailer at Sobea along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the trailer had veered off the side of the road, blocking both oncoming and onflowing traffic.

The matatu rammed into the trailer, wrecking the entire front part of the vehicle. Following the afternoon accident, passers-by rushed to the scene to rescue the survivors.

At the time of publishing this article, rescue operations were underway.

Kenyans online urged road users to drive at low speeds during the ongoing heavy rainfall season to avoid fatalities.

Others also expressed concern regarding the surge in accidents along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.

"What's the problem with the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway? Claiming the lives of passengers every day. Rest in peace the fatalities," read some of the comments.

"Until you remove lorries from the roads. This carnage will not stop."

"Kenya has become an accident/death hot spot. Where did we miss the mark as a nation or is this just normal?"

Last month, eight people died after six trucks collided, resulting in traffic along the busy highway.

Motorists plying the route lamented over narrow road and cited it as a cause of frequent accidents along the highway.

Witnesses at the scene blamed the foggy weather for affecting the drivers' vision and hence leading to loss of control as the trucks veered off the road and overturned, blocking major sections of the road.
