At least five people are feared dead after an accident occurred along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway on Saturday, April 6.

According to reports, the accident involved about six trucks which collided resulting in fatalities as multiple passengers sustained injuries.

The collision also caused traffic disruption with some motorists being forced to spend hours on the busy highway. Motorists plying the route lamented over the narrow road which was cited as a cause of frequent accidents.

By the time of publishing this article, the cause of the accident was yet to be established.

Unverified witness accounts, however, indicated that the accident might have been caused by the muddy terrain ostensibly leading to the vehicles losing control.

Also, the weather was foggy and misty which may have affected the drivers' vision.

In the photos circulating online, one of the trucks was depicted having veered off the road and overturned, blocking sections of the road.

Also, another truck had collided head-on with a third truck resulting in damages to the windscreens and bonnets of the two vehicles.

Following the accident, residents and motorists rushed to the scene to rescue the victims.

This comes even as the country continues to reel from increased road accidents which have claimed the lives of tens of Kenyans.

Data shared by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) shows that 1,213 Kenyans lost their lives to road carnage between January 1, 2024 and April 3, 2024.

To stem this, the government has announced a raft of road safety policies.

For instance, CS Murkomen has announced plans to introduce CCTV and stop arms in school buses as practiced in the US. The government is also mulling introducing speed cameras which will administer instant fines.

"Once the camera captures you breaking the law, we shall immediately alert the local police, who will come and give you your heavy fine," he stated.
