In a puzzling turn of events, an elderly man who had a matter before the Environment and Lands Court has died within the premises of Bungoma Law Courts.

The Judiciary confirmed the man's death in a statement, saying that the deceased appeared to be unwell when he arrived at the institution.

According to Judiciary Spokesperson Paul Ndemo, the man began appearing visibly unwell at around 9 am and was carried into the court compound on a motorcycle.

Due to his condition, a customer care officer handed him a Priority Card. This is a card given to elderly persons, expectant mothers, disabled people and those who are sick.

Priority Card gives the aforementioned group of people access to prioritised and expedited service so that they spend as little time as possible at the courts.

After being handed the card, the man indicated that he would wait for his advocate to arrive. He proceeded outside to lie down on the grass, as he waited with his brothers.

"When a court official went to give him further updates, he found him unresponsive," said the Judiciary Spokesperson.

Following the incident, a team of police officers were quickly alerted and arrived at the court premises, only to confirm that the elderly man had passed away.

Ndemo went on to disclose that the officers processed the scene, and the body of the deceased was moved to Bungoma County Referral Hospital Morgue.

Meanwhile, the Bugoma Law Courts have in recent weeks been marred by mysterious events that have left a section of Kenyans dumbfounded.

Just three weeks ago, at the same premises, two officers and three civilians were injured after a gun belonging to a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer accidentally discharged live rounds.

According to Ndemo, the incident occurred on September 16, during a case hearing at the court, with the Judiciary Spokesperson adding that added that the five injured individuals did not sustain serious injuries.

However, despite the five sustaining injuries and being rushed to the Bungoma Referral Hospital, the rest of the court officials and members of the public who were present during the hearing were unharmed.
