The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) which collects parking fees on behalf of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) has addressed complaints by motorists who claim to have been charged for parking despite their vehicles not being within the said areas.

In a public notice on Tuesday, May 25, the revenue collection body stated that a number of motorists had disputed penalties, prompting KRA to now rely on photographic evidence to handle such cases.

"In order to address these complaints, parking attendants in county uniforms will henceforth photograph the number plates of non-compliant motor vehicles for reference purposes in case of disputes," the tax agency noted.

Motorists utilising the Nairobi City Council parking slots were further advised to ensure prompt payment of parking fees and seasonal fees through the authorised USSD payment mode.

Since the implementation of the new parking system by NMS and KRA, motorists had been complaining of been unfairly charged for parking while their vehicles were not in Nairobi.

Media personality and comedian Jasper Muthomi, popularly known as MC Jessy, was among the individuals who raised concern after receiving notices from the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).

Additionally, KRA notified that the annual VIP Parking stickers expired on December 31, 2020, and were no longer valid.

The 2021 annual VIP authorized vehicles were now managed through the Nairobi Revenue System (NRS) parking system.

"A list of vehicles that qualify for VIP parking have been uploaded into the NRS parking system. Physical VIP parking stickers will no longer be recognised.

"KRA parking attendants will henceforth use querying devices to confirm the compliance status of such vehicles," KRA noted.
