The Moja Expressway Company on Monday, December 26, temporarily closed the Southern Bypass Exit A of the Nairobi Expressway.

According to a notice seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the closure is meant to allow the ongoing construction of the affected section along Mombasa Road.

“Motorists using the Nairobi Expressway are advised to exit using the Capital Centre or Eastern Bypass exits,” a section of the public notice read.

Earlier on, an accident at the same spot of the road left six people injured and caused a heavy traffic snarl-up forcing a temporary diversion of motorists to the Expressway.

Six people were rushed to the hospital following a Monday morning, December 26 accident that clogged traffic at the Southern Bypass Expressway exit of the Nairobi expressway.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke intimated that a mini-bus belonging to Utawala Sacco lost control and overturned consequently blocking traffic near the Mombasa road Airtel offices and causing a snarl-up at the only open section of the road still under construction.

The accident forced the diversion of motorists into the Expressway to allow the flow of traffic into the Central Business District in the peak hours of the morning.

“I had to catch a bodaboda to work because of the accident that completely blocked traffic leading into town,” an eyewitness stated.

A contact personnel from E-Plus Ambulances Kenya also confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke, that six passengers who sustained numerous injuries were rushed to hospital. Other passengers who suffered minor injuries were treated at the scene.

“The accident involved one PSV vehicle but left several people injured,” E-Plus Ambulances Kenya stated.

There were no fatalities reported from the accident by the time of publishing this article.

During the festive period, Kenyans going upcountry have been experiencing heavy traffic snarl-ups.

Kenya National Highway Authority had on Thursday, December 22, given a public notice on an intended closure of the same section of road to allow completion of construction.

According to the notice seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the road was to be closed for 7 days to allow completion of the construction for a period running from Monday, December 26, to Sunday, January 1, 2023.

The National Police Service, through its spokesperson Dr. Resila Atieno, had cautioned motorists to observe traffic rules, especially during this festive season as many Kenyans travel upcountry for celebrations.

"Police officers have been recalled from holiday. Traffic officers in the affected areas are currently receiving support from their colleagues from other departments," she stated.
