On Monday, April 24, Nairobi County Speaker Kennedy Ng'ondi narrowly escaped an accident after one of the vehicles in his motorcade was rammed by a train.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on phone, Ng'ondi confirmed that the incident happened at the Donholm crossing while on his way to work.

"One of the vehicles was hit by a train during the morning hours," the Speaker confirmed, revealing that he did not sustain any injury.

However, he disclosed that his driver was seriously injured and was admitted to intensive care in one of the nearby hospitals.

The lawmaker narrated that he narrowly evaded the accident as he was seated in the car behind the sports utility vehicle that was crashed by the train.

The Speaker claimed that the train sounded its horn on multiple occasions but wondered why the driver did not react swiftly.

A video clip seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed the vehicle, which is registered under plate number 47CG 112A, was mangled up at the rear left-hand side.

The rear windshield was also shattered, the bumper ripped into two and the spare wheel underneath the vehicle was dislodged from its holding.

In addition, the back left car door, and the fuel tank was also damaged while inside the vehicle all airbags were deployed.

Police officers and bodaboda riders arrived at the scene and pulled out the survivors from the wreckage. Officers have also launched investigations into the matter.

Preliminary reports indicated that the driver was fatigued, which was the cause of his late reaction to the accident.  However, Ng'ondi confirmed that he was not scheduled to be on duty on April 24.

At the time of publishing this article, Kenya Railways had not issued a statement about the accident, and whether the train in question was carrying passengers or cargo.
