A primary school teacher crushed to death by a train in Nakuru county watched helplessly as the train approached him at a high speed.

Railways Deputy Police Commander Said Chungi on Thursday, January 12, told the media that the 64-year-old man was knocked down by the Naivasha-bound train at 7 am while heading to work.

An eyewitness who saw the tragedy unfold revealed that the man identified as Joseph was stuck on the railway line and struggled to save himself.

"When he was crossing, one of his legs got trapped in between the rails. The train sounded the horn as it tried to slow down but it was too late," he stated.

"He first crossed the line and kept on going back and forth. From my own assessment, he looked very stressed," the bystander disclosed.

The body of the deceased was ferried to the Nakuru County Mortuary where an autopsy will be conducted.

Chungi revealed that this was the third incident in which a resident had lost his life while crossing the railway line at the section.

He asked area residents to exercise caution when crossing the railway line and urged motorists not to attempt risky manoeuvres while crossing the rail.

"Do not try to compete with the train. When the locomotive is on the track, it creates a string magnetic field which can affect the operation of the vehicle or motorbike," Chungi stated.

The police further warned residents from attempting to cross the intersections without a clear and sober mind.

Train accidents are rare occurrences in the country. In September 2021, several people were injured when a Nanyuki-bound train rammed into a soda truck at a level crossing in Karatina town.
