The family of Samuel Muturi Wanjiru, a US Marine, is in despair after their kin went missing after a vacation with his girlfriend in Puerto Rico.

While speaking to KDTV on Sunday, April 14, Muturi's mother revealed that her son has been missing since March 27 and efforts to locate him have been futile.

According to the mother, her son left home alongside his girlfriend for a short vacation in Puerto Rico to celebrate his birthday. He arrived safely and called her with details of where they were staying.

The mother of two noted that she was concerned about the safety of her son but Muturi assured her that Puerto Rico was a safe place.

On the next day, the couple is said to have gone swimming in the ocean but Muturi's girlfriend did not stay long in the water arguing that she was tired and wanted to take a nap.

Muturi went on with his swimming, however, moments later it is reported that a strong wave hit the soldier causing him to fall down.

This was the last time Muturi was seen. His mother noted that the news came as a shock since her son was swimming at the shore of the ocean.

"I was at work when I got the call that my son was in the water and he was swept away by a current.  I am hoping that he may be stranded somewhere since he knew how to swim but as days go by the hope is slowly fading," she stated.

"They were at the safest side of the beach which did not even require a lifeguard," she added.

She questioned how he disappeared without a trace. Muturi's mother explained that the family had been looking for him but he was yet to be found.

The distraught mother complained that she had not received any help from the US military adding that the service was relying on them to find Muturi.

She described her son as a warrior and brave man who was named among the best marines by his superiors. She has appealed for help from wellwishers for finances and prayer.

"I can't say the US government has done anything to help us find my son," she remarked.
