Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has explained the recent flooding that was witnessed across major estates within the city including Kilimani.

In a statement released on Monday, April 22, the governor attributed the recent flooding to the bursting of various rivers.

Some of the rivers that were highlighted were the Ngong River and the Mau Mau River.

"The bursting of the Ngong River banks has affected many areas across the city especially downstream including the flooding of Mbagathi Roundabout, flooding in Ectoville Industrial Estate in Mukuru kwa Rueben Ward, flooding in Mwiki Ward along Eastern bypass.

"Mau Mau River: The bursting of its riverbanks has seen churches and residential houses flooded in Westlands Sub County," read the statement in part.

He added that the county government had initiated plans to address the situation. However, Kenyans were also advised to be vigilant given that the weatherman had projected more rains for the week.

Additionally, as part of the government's measures to prevent any loss of life, Kenyans living near waterbeds were ordered to relocate immediately.

"It has been resolved that all Private Service Providers (PSPs) should stop illegal garbage dumping in undesignated areas and are expected to transport all the waste collected to Dandora dumpsite. Any PSP found not adhering to this their vehicles will be impounded, and PSP licences withdrawn.

"All excavations along riparian have been suspended with immediate effect," read the statement in part.

In case of emergencies, Kenyans have been advised to reach the county government through hotline number: 1508.

On the other hand, experts have warned that the current flooding in estates has been occasioned by poor planning and mushrooming of buildings within estates.
